How to Shop for a Persian Rug

A Persian carpet is an investment that can pay design dividends for years. Here's what to look for when you go shopping.

Persian rugs are beautiful, mysterious and show-stopping pieces that can last for generations. Choosing the right one from so many options can be a challenge. Read on for suggestions on what to look out for and how to get the most rug out of your shopping dollar.

Persian rugs are investments. Be prepared to pay well over your typical rug price. Judge the quality of the rug by looking at the weave and make sure it is fine enough to clearly express the design.

Look at the ticket on the rug and make sure it no fewer than 100 knots per square inch for a geometric design. Some floral patterns with more detailing can require 300 or more knots. Your dealer should be able to provide you with this information so you can get an idea of the quality of the rug.

Where the rug was made is also an important aspect. If it says “Made in Iran,” you’re in the rightplace! Rugs made in Iran are the finest on the market and have the best design and quality. These are pricey but are bound to last years.

Watch out for the design and trends of the rugs and buy one that has a classic design which never goes out of style. Trends and colors popular now may soon look dated, and the value of these rugs will decrease. A traditional design gives you a unique piece that always feels current.

A rug that's 100 years old can still be a great investment. Age makes a rug more rare and therefore more valuable.

Every rug should have a ticket with the type, origin, size, age, description of design and quality, condition, and retail value. Browse your local dealers and compare prices of the rugs that interest you to learn what is available, and what you feel comfortable buying.

When decorating your home from scratch, a good tip is to first buy your rug, then and pull colors from it for your walls, couches, pillows, and other décor. That way you can tie your whole room together with your rug and have a consistent color scheme. It is far easier to buy furniture and accessories to complement your rug than the other way around.

Bring swatches of fabric from your upholstery and drapes when shopping. It will help you and your dealer find a rug that works with your key colors. Keep in mind that dark rugs will bring your ceiling down, and light rugs will make your ceiling seem higher. If you are not sure which rug will match your room, most dealers will allow buyers try out a rug at home for a few days.

Be patient when shopping and avoid impulse buys because you never know what you can come across. Every Persian carpet is different and unique in its own way. When you finally choose the right rug, keep in mind that what you just bought is bound to last generations and is not only a rug, but a piece of art.
